WHAT’S in a name? Plenty – and in Derbyshire there are literally dozens of settlements with names that have fascinating origins — so here, to mark our silver anniversary, are 25 of the very best. Barrie Farnsworth reports

CHECK any map before the Victorian era, and you will not find a place called WHATSTANDWELL. You might find Whatstandwell Bridge mentioned – as the first was built over the River Derwent in 1391, but no mention of a settlement. And that’s because it was simply part of Crich Carr – and why Crich Carr Primary School is in the middle of what is now Whatstandwell. Confused? I’m not surprised!…
