Farewell, Gordon, you’ll never be forgotten

Gordon Banks never forgot the role that Chesterfield FC played in starting his illustrious career, as local sports journalist and broadcaster Nick Johnson reports.

GORDON BANKS OBE, who passed away at the age of 81 last month, will be forever linked with Chesterfield, having started his illustrious career at Saltergate.

Gordon recalled his tough childhood in the Tinsley area of Sheffield. He said: “I was in a very poor family. There were four sons and I was the smallest and the youngest. There were no televisions in those days. One of the few things you got pleasure out of in those days was going to the cinema – that’s if you could afford to go. I used to take a few bottles back to the local shop to get a few pence to go to the pictures.”…
