Something has taken root at Hornsbridge on Chesterfield’s largest and busiest roundabout. Standing eight metres tall, it’s called “Growth” and is the work of local artist and designer, Melanie Jackson.  Rosie Gilligan finds out how “Growth” grew…

The sculpture occupies the whole of the roundabout. Its eight roots or spokes begin on the outer perimeter and come together in the centre to form a stem of eight petals that twist upwards in an anti-clockwise direction. These gracefully unfold to reveal a magnificent seed head – silver balls on stalks that catch the light as they reach to the sky. It’s an eye-catching, intriguing and uplifting sculpture designed to gladden the hearts of passing commuters and travellers…
