WHAT MAKES ONE EMERALD RING MORE VALUABLE THAN ANOTHER?

During a recent valuation, I was asked to value for auction purposes a very large square cut emerald which turned out to weigh approximately 15 carats – equivalent to the size of a marble. You would expect that to be very valuable, wouldn’t you? However, because of the many fissures in the gem, it is expected to make £300-500 in a specialist auction. By comparison, a single stone emerald ring with a cushion cut stone weighing just 3 carats is expected to make £3,000 to £4,000 – as it’s all about the quality of the gemstone…
