Godfrey Holmes fondly recalls his friend and mentor, Alec Woodward Sherwood (1912-2002), one of Chesterfield’s finest photographers – and a founding member of the Youth Hostelling Association.
I WILL REMEMBER Alec Sherwood: someone who brought to Chesterfield from Leeds all his talents in so many fields; not least photography; someone who summed up the 20th Century which was his work-space and playground, literally; devoted husband of Anne, who predeceased him.
Years after Alec’s lonely death in retirement, it was impossible to pass along Old Road, Ashgate, without glancing right just before The Manor, and recollecting many happy hours of conversation and the showing of slides at his home.
I am the privileged inheritor of those slides: some now digitised for the first time. Many won competitions locally, regionally and even nationally. Yet Alec would
never boast. He was a private, even shy, gentleman of the old school…
