During a recent valuation, I was asked to value for auction purposes a very large square cut emerald which turned out to weigh approximately 15 carats – equivalent to the size of a marble. You would expect that to be very valuable, wouldn’t you? However, because of the many fissures in the gem, it is expected to make £300-500 in a specialist auction.
