Unchanged for centuries – then transformed

Patrick Coleman looks at how much Bakewell has changed over the last 50 years or so.

LIKE MANY SMALL TOWNS, Bakewell seems to have changed more in the last y years than in the previous two centuries combined. Such sentiments are, no doubt, exaggerated. Yet there can be no question that the pace of change a er 1960 increased dramatically, altering Bakewell in ways not seen since the days of the Industrial Revolution.
