Fifty years after Mods & Rockers first hit the headlines, Deborah Barham Smith looks at the dangers Derbyshire poses to the new breed of biker.

TWO WHEELS ARE A DAMNED MENACE, quickest way to the cemetery”, my father was often heard saying.  It was, therefore, perhaps fitting that he did not live to see my two daughters both heading off into the blue yonder on their motorbikes. Nowadays, those heading off on two wheels are predominantly middle-aged men who have the money to relive their youth by purchasing expensive motorbikes. Most of them gained their licence decades earlier, they have had a long break from biking while bringing up families, and  fail to accept that their skill-sets might be lacking. Many, though, are still happy to buy machines that would not look out of place at the front of a Grand Prix…
