Hulleys marks its centenary with a new ‘Snake’ service!

Steve Brown reports on a famous bus company’s daring initiative as it celebrates its centenary.

THE navy blue and cream buses operated by Hulleys of Baslow are a familiar sight on our roads. Yet many will have been surprised to learn that, despite the presence of Covid-19 and the reduction in passengers that brought, the company recently introduced the first regular commercial bus service between the cities of Manchester and Sheffield for many, many years – and over the Snake Pass to boot! This is a radical departure from the network of local and schools services that the company has run for most of its history and, according to Hulleys’ new owner, Alf Crofts, and his assistant, Jonny Axe, it represents the way forward for the bus industry..
