August means summer holidays for many and hopefully a time to relax and enjoy your garden … or maybe someone else’s.
Did you know that many gardens open for the National Garden Scheme also sell home grown plants? You can often find varieties not readily available in the garden centres at very reasonable prices and of course you can see them growing in the garden.
Yew Tree Bungalow in Tansley will be open on Sunday 16th August. This cottage style garden is a plant hunter’s paradise and includes unusual trees and shrubs. Look out for the plant sale as well as delicious home-made cakes. Admission is £5, children free. Dogs on leads welcome.
Another garden well known for its plant sale is 27 Wash Green in Wirksworth, which is open on Sunday 23rd August from 11am to 4pm. This large garden has sweeping lawns, ponds and productive fruit and vegetable garden. You can enjoy beautiful views of Wirksworth and the Ecclesbourne valley from the garden.
Admission is £5, children free. Dogs on leads welcome.
Chesterfield Canal Trust gets 10th Green Flag
Hollingwood Hub has been awarded the coveted Green Flag Award and is officially recognised as one of the country’s best green spaces.
The Chesterfield Canal Trust, which leases the site from Derbyshire County Council, is celebrating after receiving the award for the tenth year running.
Jim Bower, who leads the Trust’s Gardening Team at the Hub, said: “It is brilliant to get this official recognition for the hard work of our volunteers. The public tell us they love it and we take great pride in creating such a welcoming space.”
Hollingwood Hub is the home of the Chesterfield Canal Trust. Besides the beautiful garden, it houses the Trust’s Information Centre & Shop, Katey’s Coffee Shop and a large car park. The Trust runs regular public trips and charter cruises on its tripboat Madeline while CJB Training & Adventure runs paddlesports hire aided by Trust volunteers.
The Green Flag Award Scheme is run by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, under contract from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, in partnership with Keep Scotland Beautiful, Keep Wales Tidy and Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful.
