A large and lovely parish – for people and horses!

Nick Wheat, chairman of Holmesfield Village Society, has lived in the village since he was seven. A publisher and graphic designer, he’s also a  keen collector of village archives, old postcards and photographs – so who better to tell us about the place where locals joke there are more horses than people!

HOLMESFIELD is actually a collection of several small hamlets which, together with the village itself, forms one of the largest parishes in Derbyshire in terms of area. Only Ashover can claim to be larger. Millthorpe is the larger of these hamlets, nestling in the pastoral Cordwell valley. The other hamlets may be smaller in stature but they still form an important part of a larger community where locals joke that there are more horses than people!…
