Hard work was the price of a love token!

KNITTING NEEDLE SHEATHS were a vital piece of equipment during the 18th Century and first half of the 19th Century, when people in rural communities, in the old county of Westmoreland in particular, set to work knitting. Socks and stockings are knitted on three needles with a point at each end, they needed a small piece of wood to hold the third knitting needle; this was then tucked into a piece of string which was tied around the knitter’s waist.
